Election Commission should be clear in its view on life-time ban on convicted politicians

It refers to Supreme Court on 12.07.2017 requiring Election Commission to come clear on its stand on a life-time ban on contesting elections by tainted persons. It is noteworthy that Election Commission supported the Public Interest Litigation –PIL- at Supreme Court for provisions to decide criminal cases related to people representatives, public servants and members of judiciary within one year and to debar the convicted persons from legislature, executive and judiciary for life, further supporting PIL for implementing important electoral reforms as proposed by Election Commission, Law Commission and Nation Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution.

Since Central Government has not supported the PIL on the ground that judiciary should not interfere on such legislative matters, it is time for autonomous Election Commission to come clear in support of the PIL by using its autonomy as was done in regime of great poll-reformist TN Seshan in his tenure as Chief Commissioner of India.
