CAG report criticizes poor food-quality in trains: Only packaged food should be sold in trains rather than compulsory charging of cost in tickets

It refers to now Comptroller and Auditor General-CAG of India holding poor quality food prepared in most unhygienic conditions being served in Indian trains, after repeated complaints of poor-quality food prepared in most unhygienic conditions being served in Indian trains including also prepared in private kitchens.

Also there is a sizable number of rail-passengers which do not consume rail-food because of some peculiar food-habits like Jain-Food without onion and garlic, despite their being forced compulsory paying cost of food with cost of rail-ticket in premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi. Variety of branded packaged food by reputed companies should be made available on payment of cost by giving sale-commission to rail staff. Abolishing charging food-cost with rail-fare will not only ensure hygiene but also will abolish begging tips by rail-staff from the passengers.

Rather scope of Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited-IRCTC can be increased for preparing packaged food like is done in case of Rail-Neer mineral-water so that IRCTC units to be set up in different parts of country may also cater to mid-day meal served in schools, where there are usual complaints of poor-quality food prepared in most unhygienic manner even causing death of school-children. It may be recalled that there used to be a public sector undertaking manufacturing huge variety of breads, fruit-cakes etc under brand name Modern which used to be very popular and could be consumed in marketed form without requiring any further cooking or baking etc.
