The release of the US-based Health Effects Institute’s (HEI) State of Global Air report has generated the latest alarm over air pollution in India. The report includes an analysis of 25 years of Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data assessing the impact of air pollution on mortality.According to 2015 GBD data, PM2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micron) contributed to 4.2 million deaths globally, 52% of which occurred in China and India. In 2015, ground-level ozone caused 254,000 deaths worldwide, with India accounting for 42% of these deaths.The report, and media attention, has been focused on particulate matter pollution which has the most immediate harmful impact. It's a simple case of cheating and breach-of-trust by a Jain "charitable" trust called Vardhman Sanskar Dham (Trust Reg. no. 19790 – Mumbai). In 2007, Vardhaman Sanskar Dham purchased a flat in Nairut building, Rajiv Nagar, Virar, for Rs 4.30 lakh. Four years later, in 2011, the trust sold this flat to a blind man named Mr Jethmal Sonigra for Rs 13.19 lakhs, earning more than three times the amount that it had invested. However, although the first letterhead-receipt of the trust clearly shows that Mr Sonigra had paid for purchase of the flat (565 sq. ft. x Rs 2,600/-), the second letter says that this amount is a "deposit" against which "we have hand over possession for residence purpose". New estimates of the global burden of disease (GBD) released today by the US-based Health Effect Institute (HEI) paint a grim picture for India. Globally, air pollution is estimated to cause more than 4.2 million early deaths -- of these, 1.1 million deaths occur in India alone. This is more than a quarter of the global deaths. India now nearly equals China which scores the highest number of early deaths due to PM2.5. Worse, India now tops the dubious list of highest number of early deaths due to ozone pollution.
