addtop, प्रेस विज्ञप्ति
A school in Punjab’s Moga, a Kendriya Vidyalaya from Hebbal in Karnataka, and a sports school from Sonipat, Haryana claimed the top honours as 2016’s ‘greenest’ schools in India. Union human resources development minister Prakash Javadekar gave away the Green Schools Awards, instituted by the New Delhi-based research and advocacy body Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), here today. The awards are given every year after a rigorous audit of how schools are walking the talk with respect to environmental good practices and natural resource management. Every year, the audit and the awards focus on one aspect / issue of resource management – this year, the subject in the crosshairs was water and sanitation. Giving away the awards, Javadekar commended CSE for taking environment beyond...

Early deaths due to ozone pollution are the highest in India

New estimates of the global burden of disease (GBD) released today by the US-based Health Effect Institute (HEI) paint a grim picture for India. Globally, air pollution is estimated to cause more than 4.2 million early deaths -- of these, 1.1 million deaths occur in India alone. This is more than a quarter of the global deaths. India now nearly equals China which scores the highest number of early deaths due to PM2.5. Worse, India now tops the dubious list of highest number of early deaths due to ozone pollution. The rate of increase in early deaths in India is quite scary. While early deaths related to PM2.5 in China have increased by 17.22 per cent since 1990, in India these have increased by 48 per cent. Similarly, while early deaths due to ozone in China have stabilised since 1990, ...

DeMo Critics Need To Pipe Down: FM’s Deposit Numbers Suggest Big Black Money Catch

[The human and institutional costs of DeMo no longer look unacceptable, given the potential scale of black money discovered in the deposits surge]     Not too many people commented on the biggest set of numbers revealed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his 2016-17 budget: not the fiscal deficit, not the tax collections, but the sheer size of deposits made in several crore accounts post-demonetisation.   If nothing else, the knowledge that so many Indians hoarded so much cash in their homes and offices, much of it probably undisclosed incomes, is itself worth the whole effort.   Barring TN Ninan, who wrote about this huge cache of potential black money in his Business Standard column, few people took note.   This is what Jaitley said in his budget speech:   After the demo...

The Indian bureaucracy is notorious for inventing outrageous ways of self-aggrandisement. However, nothing demonstrates its unbridled audacity for disregarding all civilised norms of probity than the disreputable Non Functional Upgrade (NFU) scheme. One must doff one’s hat to the ingenuity of the bureaucracy to loot the nation. Simultaneously, the political leadership needs to be pitied for a total lack of spine to check this blatant delinquency. Bureaucracy rules the roost.   The Sixth Central Pay Commission, in its March 2008 report, recommended introduction of NFU to reward civil servants of 49 ‘Organized Central Group A Civil Services’ with automatic time-bound pay promotions till the Higher Administrative Grade. Subsequently, it was made applicable to the IPS and the Indian...

To, The Chief El...

Vigil necessary on excessive cash-withdrawal from bank-accounts

Study should be made about quantum of cash-withdrawals after lifting of cash-withdrawal limit from current-accounts in banks. It is also necessary because Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced removing all restrictions on cash-withdrawals even from savings-accounts in banks from 13.03.2017.   In an era when central government is trying, and rightly so, for a cashless economy, there needs to be proper check on excessive cash withdrawals from bank-accounts to prevent re-emergence of parallel economy of black money and hawala-operations. Income Tax Department can ask banks to provide details of bank-accounts and PAN-numbers where cash-withdrawal in a month has exceeded some stipulated limit. Auditors can be required to mention in their audit-reports about purpose of such heavy ...

It refers to ‘paytm’ TV-advertisement showing a child getting cash-gift through ‘paytm’ on his mobile-phone from his aunt despite specific directions from his mother for not accepting any such cash-gift from the aunt. This advertisement while portraying the child as a greedy nephew, also wrongly educates a child to disobey his mother behind her back even after assuring his mother about obeying her. Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, The Advertising Standards Council of India, Union Ministry for Child Development and National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) should take necessary steps to stop airing the said TV advertisement. The eye has never seen a place like it,” wrote Persian ambassador Abdur Razzak of Vijayanagara, capital of the Vijayanagara empire, “and the ear was never informed that there existed anything to equal it in the world.” He was writing in 1443, during the long summer of the empire. Other visitors would praise the city’s wealth and prosperity in later years; Domingo Paes, a Portuguese traveller, compared it favourably to the Italian city-states in 1520. A high compliment indeed—the latter, at the height of the Renaissance, were global centres of wealth, commerce and culture. Sailing east along the Mediterranean coast would have brought a traveller like Paes to one of their few rivals, Constantinople (now Istanbul)—in its time the richest and largest city in Europe. The role of cities as engi...

The clamour for security, accountability and transparency is leading to unfettered increase in the power of states. We are enacting law after law, introducing technology after technology, to render citizens transparent to the state. But at the same time, we are weakening protections and consenting to technologies in a way that makes the state less transparent to us. Totalitarian states often do this against the wishes of their citizens; in our democracy, our consent is being mobilised to put an imprimatur over more control and arbitrariness. And in a fit of distraction, we have come to believe that giving the state more powers will conjure up all the goodies we need. All it will produce is a disciplinarian society more under the state’s control. Just witness the latest exhibit. The Fina...
